The ketogenic diet is a very low-carb, high-fat and moderate protein diet. The goal of the diet is to reduce carbohydrate intake and replace it with (healthy) fat. This reduction in carbohydrates can put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When in ketosis, your body becomes efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which in turn gets converted and used as energy for the brain. Specifically, your guiding principle on the keto diet is eating fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day or 20g-25g of NET (digestible) carbohydrates (total carbohydrates less fiber).
